PROJECTS
The Inverclyde CAN includes ecological projects in Inverclyde, with a specific focus on those promoting food justice, sustainable and active travel, share & repair schemes, and biodiversity enhancement (see the map below).
It follows principles of climate justice, creating beneficial actions for both society and the environment, leaving no one behind.
-
A more equitable and healthier food system is a necessary target for a climate resilient community.
It is estimated that 9.5 million tonnes of food go to waste every year in the UK. This still happens when 1 in 5 people in the UK are struggling to eat. A new local approach to food is urgently needed, aiming at creating a sustainable food chain accessible to all, minimizing waste.
-
Sustainable active travel has great positive impacts on health and the environment. Walking and cycling are economical, better for physical and mental health, they reduce air pollution and cut carbon emissions.
Adopting sustainable travel modes is one of those small everyday action that can improve your own and others’ lives, building a healthier, cleaner and fairer place.
-
Nature and biodiversity protection is the underlying theme of all projects on active travel, growing food, sharing resources and climate awareness.
At the centre of collective and individual actions lies the need to connect with the world we inhabit, valuing local biodiversity, thriving communities, and local economy. The term “connectedness” indicates the way we relate to nature or experience nature, feeling a close relationship to our surroundings.
-
A significant driver of climate change is mass production and overconsumption, including resource extraction.
The main responsibility lies in the unsustainable production modes, but it is important for consumers to make more cost-efficient and sustainable choices. Switching approach on what we own, learning ways to repair, extending the lifespan of what we own. By understanding the consequences of mass production, we can take important steps to protect the place we live in, and ensure better futures.
