A more equitable and healthier food system is an important target for a climate resilient community. It is estimated that 9.5 million tonnes of food go to waste every year in the UK, equal to 25 million tonnes of CO2e. Half of the food waste in the UK is produced by supply chain, with tonnes of still edible food. This still happens when 1 in 5 people in the UK are struggling to eat, with the 30% being children. This is why we need a new local approach to food, creating collaborations between the farming sector, businesses and decisionmakers, to create a sustainable food chain accessible to all, while minimizing waste.

FOOD

The Inverclyde Zero Waste Pantry

The Pantry is a zero waste shop based in Greenock and Port Glasgow.
Each week, it offers a variety of fruit and veg, tins and cans, snacks, frozen and chilled food, toiletries and more, saving them from landfill. In 2023, it saved 162 tonnes of surplus food.

The Pantry is open to Inverclyde residents only, regardless of financial and employment status, it is open to everyone.

The Trust currently runs two Pantry shops, in Greenock (115 Grieve Road) and Port Glasgow (7 ½ John Wood Street). Each of them has its own lifetime membership of £1 each.

Each week, shop members can choose to shop ten items from shelves, fridge and freezer, always for £2.50. The value of the basket will always be worth more than £10-£15.

You can become a member by visiting the shops, and also do your first shopping! The team of volunteers will be there to help.
